Obituary

Charles Ernest Richards, son of Ernest & Elizabeth (Moore) Richards, was born at home near Mount Ayr, Iowa on May 11, 1931. Charles graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1950 where he was the captain of the undefeated football team his senior year. Following graduation, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked for Bendix Aviation. He married Donna Rinehart on September 1, 1951 in Bethany, Missouri. Following their marriage, Charles was called to service. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army. Daughter, Kathy, was born in 1955 and son, Charles Kelly, was born in 1957. They all settled in Mount Ayr where Charles worked for Hy-Vee for the next 20 years. He also did a little farming and plumbing & heating work.

Charles loved to follow Kathy and Kelly around to their various school activities; then later spent a lot of time with the grandkids. He was an active member of the United Baptist Presbyterian Church. He was proud that he helped his son build the church. He was also a longtime member of the Ringgold Post 172, American Legion.

Charles passed away July 27, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Marion (Charles) Skinner, Bonnie (Bob) Pratt, Robert (Marilyn) Richards, Jane (Floy) Hutt, Allen (Lila) Richards, Bill Richards, Connie Jacobson and brothers-in-law Raymond Sickels and Ralph Sheddrick.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 68 years, Donna Richards; children Kathy (Steve) Cole of Polk City, Iowa and Kelly (Shirley) Richards of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren Kelsie (Story) Schankel, Shelby (Ryan) Ravens, Lydia (Jason) Wacker, Devin (Casi) Richards; great grandchildren Rylan Ravens, Sawyer Schankel, Khloe Schankel, Emerleigh Wacker, Steele Schankel, Silas Ravens, and Hudson Wacker. Other survivors include sisters Ann (Bill) Sickels and Sue Sickels; brother-in-law Bob Jacobson; sisters-in-law Jean Richards and Fern Sheddrick; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are to EveryStep Hospice in Mount Ayr.
