Beulah Walter

July 16, 1924 ~ May 28, 2020 (age 95)

Obituary

Beulah Arlene Payton arrived in this world July 16, 1924 to Henry Aldis Payton and Luster Stephens in Decatur County, Iowa.  She had 3 sisters: Lila, Velma, and Freeda.  Another sister, Maude, passed away at the age of 2.  Beulah was a cheerleader and played the viola in the school orchestra at Kellerton High School.  She graduated at the age of 16.  She attended 2 years of business school in Omaha and fondly remembered the streetcars she used for transportation.  She began working for the Federal Land Bank in Mt. Ayr, Iowa and she and her sister Freeda lived in an apartment while Freeda finished high school.  They remained very close throughout their lives.

Beulah met Jerald Kenneth Walter while working in Mt. Ayr and they married November 30, 1947 in Creston, Iowa.  She developed close relationships with Jerry’s siblings and spouses, and she had a close bond with her sister-in-law, Barbara Walter.  She continued to work until the birth of their first son, Kenneth Allen Walter October 25, 1948.  They had their second son, Merle Robert Walter August 16, 1955.  Beulah later began working for the Selective Service in Mt. Ayr until about 1967.  After that, she spent her time helping with the farm she and Jerry bought in 1955 and stayed there until Jerry passed away in 1991.  Over the years, Jerry and Beulah kept a lot of grandchildren, other family, and friends busy, especially in the summer.  She would serve lunch frequently to several friends and family members helping with the farm and would carry jugs of iced tea out to the fields for everyone.

Beulah lived a life full of joys and sorrows and she was a faithful follower of God.  She was an active and committed member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Ayr serving in many different roles over the years.  She was also a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Mt. Ayr helping with services and events.  She spent several years working in the 4-H Inn at the Iowa State Fair, with grandchildren in tow, to raise money to build the current First Christian Church after a fire destroyed the previous building.  Beulah was a hard-working faithful farm wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She meant a lot to many friends and family and was always a blessing to be around.

She was a woman of faith, a healer of grandchildren, a calming presence for her husband, a loving mother, and a caring friend and family member generous with her time.   She never lost her temper, was supportive and patient with everyone, was willing to work hard, and would always lend a hand to whomever needed it.  She loved playing cards and bingo, going to the meal site with her sister-in-law, Barbara Walter, spending time with her friends and family, watching soap operas in the afternoon, and listening to books from the School for the Blind in her later years.

Beulah left this world May 28, 2020.  She is survived by her sons Kenneth (Donna) Walter and Merle (Patti) Walter; grandchildren Ben (Laura) Walter, Erin (Heath) Bailey, and Roxanne Walter (Kevin Webb), Chip (Katie) Williams, and Allison Walter; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Henry Aldis Payton and Luster Stephens; her sisters: Lila Vanderflught, Velma Hupp, Freeda Faust, and Maude M Payton; her husband Jerald Walter; her grandson: Samuel Walter; and many brothers and sisters-in-law and friends.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr or the Heritage Park Apartments.
