Wanda M. Morgan

Wanda Morgan was born in Scranton, PA on April 16, 1923 to Nellie and Stanley Leonard and passed away at home on May 6, 2019 at the age of 96.

In 1949 she married David T. Morgan and they were blessed with one son, David W. Morgan.  They moved to Lamoni, Iowa in 1963 where she resided until her death.  Wanda loved her family and church, and was faithful to the Community of Christ family.

Wanda was a Graceland College graduate, attended Drake University, the University of Utah and received her Master’s Degree in Education from Northwest Missouri State University with specialization in reading and learning programs. After teaching for the Central Decatur School System, she accepted the position of Director of Reading Programs at the Southwest Iowa Learning Resources Center in Red Oak, Iowa.  She later joined the staff at the Iowa Department of Education in Des Moines as a reading consultant serving southwest Iowa schools until her retirement.  She was a regular presenter at local, State and National reading conferences and was one of 3 candidates selected from the State of Iowa to serve as a member of the National Talent Pool, U.S. Office of Education, a group available for consultation to National School Districts.

As an educator, Wanda considered each student unique and worthy of only her best – nothing less. And it was when a student overcame severe reading problems and experienced the joy of learning that she found her greatest satisfaction, purpose and ministry. In an effort to help make this possible, she developed an innovative program that as the result of an intensive search by the American Institute for Research (AIR) of Reading Programs, was selected out of 2,500 nominees as one of 222 for writing the most effective and outstanding reading programs in American schools.  The program was also credited in the U.S. Congressional Record, 93rd Congress.  She served on several State advisory councils including The Right to Read and was appointed to serve on the Title IV advisory council when the state divided into fourteen area education agencies (AEA’s).  Her responsibilities included the evaluation of applications for approval for Title IV grant funding.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, David T. Morgan, her parents, Nellie and Stanley Leonard, 2 brothers (Edward and William) and 3 sisters (Estelle, Ann and Florence), and daughter-in-law Pamela A. Morgan.  She is survived by her son, David W. Morgan and Lisa McLain of Lamoni, IA, a beloved Granddaughter, Niccole of Osceola, Iowa, and one sister, Jeannie Blackledge of Clark Summit, PA.

Any donations can be made in Wanda’s name to Hospice@EveryStep.org. A private graveside service will be held at a later date with burial at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni, Iowa.
