Virginia Siverly

Virginia Siverly, daughter of Rue and Gladys (Elliott) Keenan, was born on October 21, 1928 at her family’s home two miles west of Maloy, Iowa.  She was welcomed into the family by an older brother Lee and two older sisters, Dorothy and Jean.  The Keenan family was later blessed with 2 more sons- Robert and Karl Marion.  Virginia attended grade school in Maloy.  She went to high school in Mount Ayr, Iowa where she obtained her normal training certificate to teach.  She taught in several country schools in Ringgold County. On March 7, 1947, she married Fred Siverly.  They lived and farmed in the Clearfield area for 72 years. To this union three children were born:  Nancy Jean, Monica Sue and Kenneth Lee.  A niece, Martha Lou Bennett, joined the family in 1962.

In the early 1960’s, Virginia began substitute teaching in Clearfield School.  While subbing, she began working towards her college degree.  Virginia attended Creston Community College and Northwest Missouri State University.  After years of night classes and summer sessions, she earned her B.S. in elementary education at the same time her daughter Nancy graduated from NWMSU.  After twenty years, Virginia retired from teaching.

Virginia enjoyed being part of the Clearfield community.  She was a member of the Clearfield Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Clearfield Library Board.  She later enjoyed being the librarian at the Clearfield Public Library for many years.

Virginia passed away on January 29, 2022, at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Fred, her son Kenneth, her parents Rue and Gladys Keenan, siblings and their spouses; Lee (Sheryl) Keenan, Dorothy (Beryl) Hall, Jean (Karl) Wurster, and Robert (Betty) Keenan, brothers and sisters-in-law; L.L. (Alice) Siverly, Winifred (Orville) Frus, Belle Bennett, Ethel (Paul) Graham, Joan (Arlo) Beggs and son-in-law Ron Mobley.

Sue, I was so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I remember when my mother passed in 1977. Casey was just 5 months old. I still miss her, but I have Christmas cactus that she had and it did bloom last winter the first time since wse moved into our house. What a good memory to see that cactus when I exercise. You have my deepest sympathy and will be in my thoughts and prayers.
