Robert Shay

Robert Edward Shay, son of Robert Thomas and Norma Lucille Jones Shay, was born on July 4, 1946, at the Creston hospital in Creston, Iowa. Bob was welcomed into his family by his sister Janice and then later joined by his younger sister Carol. Bob spent his childhood on the family farm southwest of Benton, Iowa. He attended Mount Ayr High School and graduated with the class of 1964.

On September 2, 1967, Bob was united in marriage to Kathryn Ann Kuhl at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Creston, Iowa. Bob was drafted into the US Army on January 24, 1968, and went to basic training in Fort Bliss, Texas. He left for Vietnam on his birthday, July 4, 1968, and was assigned to the 109th Quartermaster Company Air Support Division based at Cam Rahn Bay. Here he was qualified serving on supply drop missions. In Vietnam, Bob earned the National Defense Service Medal, two overseas bars, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Marksman M-14 Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Purple Heart. Bob returned stateside on his birthday, July 4, 1969, and was honorably discharged on October 31, 1969.

Bob farmed in partnership with his father and like the generations before him, he was a cattleman. He was a proud father of his four sons and was an avid supporter of their involvement in athletics and other activities. Bob was an outdoorsman and nature enthusiast, enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping and could play cards with the worthiest opponent. In recent years, he enjoyed traveling the tractor pull circuit, visiting all of the different venues and visiting with friends. Bob was a member of the Ringgold County Fair Board and volunteered annually at the Iowa Boys High School State Wrestling Tournament for more than 40 years.

To all of Bob's family, I am so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. I know we had a similar passion. I haven't missed a day of the State Wrestling Tournament since 1974. Last year my wife and I visited with Bob for quite a while right when my wife got to Wells Fargo. I remember telling her (Shari) all about Bob and his many many years working at the tournaments. I really enjoyed our visits. He had seen a whole lot and knew what he was talking about. He was pretty "up front" and blunt about what he had to say. Things won't be near the same at the State Tournament without Bob. He usually spoke about his children during our visits, as well as about wrestling stuff. I will never forget Bob. R.I.P. friend

Raymond had good visits with Bob over the years at the Diagonal Tractor Pull and enjoyed his commentaries about the tractors. We extend sincere sympathy for your loss. Parents and grandparents are important branches on a family tree that are greatly missed when they are gone. May God give you peace and comfort in the days ahead. Raymond and Donna Shields

The entire Howie family is sorry for your loss. We know how much grief, regret and loss you feel. Remember attending all the ballgames through many years with your folks - they were always your greatest supporters even with some rough admonishments thrown in. So many community groups and organizations will miss Bob along with the rest of us. Enjoyed getting to know all of Bob's sons through high school classes (along with a couple of daughters-in-law) and have to say Bob's influence was evident in all. In my case, it was always positive!

The staff of the Iowa High School Athletic Association wants to pass along our condolences to the entire family of Bob Shay. He was such a valued volunteer at our State Wrestling Tournament, not only accurately helping at score tables and clocks, but keeping all of the other volunteers on their toes! We will miss him dearly, and will pray for your family during this difficult time.
