Martha Alice (Bladon) Hammond was born in Clearfield, IA on September 9, 1928 to Vernon A. “Slim” and Vera M. (Green) Bladon. She graduated from Clearfield High School. For six years following high school, Martha taught at one-room country schools in Knowlton and Clearfield. On February 12, 1949, she was united in marriage to Richard Dean Hammond at the First Christian Church in Creston. They settled on a farm near Diagonal where they started their family. Martha had two children Richard Jr “Dick” born in 1949 and Diana born in 1953. In 1958, Martha began working at the Diagonal Community School as the secretary in the superintendent’s office. After 30 years, Martha retired from the Diagonal School in 1988.
Throughout her life Martha enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Martha and Richard enjoyed traveling and one of their favorite places to go was the Iowa State Fair. She and Richard spent hours playing cards and taught the grandchildren to play. She loved dancing, attending “Jam” sessions, and assisted in starting the Cloverleaf Square-Dancing Club. She was a proud supporter of the Diagonal Maroons and took pride in her community.
Martha moved from Diagonal to Creston in 2018 to be closer to family. Martha passed away at her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents; in-laws Foster and Mary Hammond; brothers Doyle and LaVern Bladon; and son-in-law Curt Turner.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Richard “Dick” Hammond, Jr. and Diana Turner (James Pinson); grandchildren Callie (Mike) Bruce, Tiffini (Jason) Knight, Katie Turner (BJ Thompson), Ryan (Nikki) Hammond, Travis (Emily) Turner, and Atisha Bruce; great-grandchildren Evan, Caitlin, Brooklyn, Berkley, Wyatt, Beau, Cole, Kyle, Kennedy, Ethan, Cael, Ella, Ben, Abbie and Owen; brother, Frank (Ginger) Bladon; sister-in-laws Helen Bladon, Rene Bladon, and Phyllis Ann (Bill) Andrews; aunt Doris Green and a host of loving nephews and nieces who fondly remember her as “Sis”.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are to Dollars For Scholars in Diagonal or Creston and the United Church of Diagonal.
Dick and Diana and families,
We are praying for your families as you adjust to the death of Martha. She was always such an encouragement, so interested in people and how she could help. I can still see her in the Diagonal school office--friendly, inviting smile and quickly moving to welcome and assist whoever came in.How special that she was the grand marshall at the Labor Day parade!

So sorry for your loss. Martha was very special to me and my family. I am glad I got to visit with her a short time ago. She was the best secretary my husband had and all the students were like her own kids. She will be missed but many memories will be relived.
