Mark Watson

Mark Irwin Watson, the son of E.M. (Doc) and Geneva Alberta (Miller) Watson, was born August 28, 1954 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Mark passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 25, 2019.

Mark attended school in Diagonal and graduated with the class of 1972.

Mark worked as an ambulance driver for the Creston Hospital and in the receiving department at Kmart.

In February of 1986, Mark and Ken Hickman began their life together and moved to Scottsdale, AZ. While in Arizona, Mark worked for Kmart. Arizona would be their home until October 1999, when they returned to Des Moines, Iowa where Mark worked for Guide One Insurance.

Mark developed a love of cars at an early age. He actually wrecked one before turning 14! He would offer to clean a car just so he could drive it. Family was very important to Mark. He loved family gatherings and vacations. Mark was definitely the life of the party and was known to say, “It’s 5:00 o’clock somewhere.”

He is survived by Ken Hickman, his partner of 33 years; sisters Dixie (Jack) Taylor and Kay Pratt; brothers Jay (Donna) Watson and Steve (Carolyn) Watson; nephews and nieces Darla (Gary) Sobotka, Karen (Shon) Berry, Patty (Chris) Eaton, Jim (Lisa) Taylor, Rick (Claire) Pratt, Stephanie (Brad) Butler, Amy (Scott) Haney, Jennifer (TJ) Casey, Sara (Wes) Little, Kayren (Mike) Davidson, Anna Cunningham, EJ Watson, and Miles Watson; aunt Evelyn Miller; and many other relatives and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Ann & Bill Warin; brother-in-law Larry Pratt; and nephews Randy Pratt and Rob Pratt.

Memorials are to the United Church of Diagonal.

Guestbook

Mark will be in my heart forever! He drove most of my cars more than I did. We had such good memories of high school, college and beyond. He was one of my very best friends and the world was better to have him in it. What a shock to have him gone so soon. Rest in Jesus my friend until we meet again. I will love you forever.

Rich & I were sad to hear Mark had passed away. We have fond memories of FUN times down at Stavers farm. Mark was the most sincere person! We kept in touch on Facebook. He will be missed by so many. RIP Mark.

Mark, You was always a favorite in our family. I don't know if I ever got the chance to say thank you to You and Ken for looking after my Grandma when you all would come to Diagonal for a visit. You will be greatly missed by everyone you ever come in contact with. I will never forget the days of playing pool and bumper ball even though I am sure there were times you wished that snot nosed toe head kid would go down the street.

Met Mark when our apartment complex had a fire, and come to find out, we both worked for GuideOne. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Always had a smile for me when we passed in the hall. Rest in Peace Mark.

Im heartbroken to hear about Mark. He was my cubicle wall neighbor for many years and one of the funniest people I have ever met. He was definitely the Chef Ramsey when it came to scotcheroos and I will miss those and Mark tremendously. He was truly one of my favorite funny people from Guideone and I will miss him!

Ken and Watson family, Very sad to hear this news. Mark was my grandmas neighbor when he lived in Diagonal and he did so much for her but most especially he always brightened her day. He impacted so many people in a positive way that I suspect he never even realized or thought about. A truly good person who set a good example for us all.
