Marcella Kerns-Scott

Marcella Ann Shoenhair, daughter of Marjorie and John Shoenhair, was born November 8, 1932, in Clearfield, IA. She entered God's rest on December 13, 2021, at the age of 89 with care provided by the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA.

She graduated from Clearfield High School with the class of 1951. Marcella was married to Donald Kerns in 1951 and had four children. She married Leo Scott in 1988.

Marcella always enjoyed working with people. She was one of the first cooks at Clearfield Clearview Nursing Home in the early '60s. She worked for ISU Extension Service helping train young women how to cook with basic ingredients to make a healthy diet for their families. While at the farm, she loved entertaining foreign visitors and exchange students. She always had homemade bread and cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven.

She loved to travel with friends and family. She moved to the Des Moines area in the mid-eighties. She enjoyed life and always had a smile and a helping hand for everyone. In her free time, she especially enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, dancing, and singing.

She was an avid quilter. She always had at least two quilts going at the same time. She and her quilting friends traveled the state’s going to quilting shows and fabric shops. She made countless intricate quilts for her children, grandchildren, and friends. These quilts will be treasured for generations.

Anyone who knew Marcella also knew her little friend, Missy. Missy traveled everywhere with Marcella, including church on Sundays. The two were inseparable.

Marcella was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church, Windsor Heights Methodist Church, and Waukee Methodist Church. She was a regular at Bible Studies.

Marcella is survived by three of her children: Steven and his wife, Becky of Clearfield (sons Karl and Matt (Kaylynn)); Suzanne and her husband Kevin Finck of Robins, IA; Kevin of Story City (son Evan (Megan) daughter Ava and son Lucas) and daughter Jennifer (Jacob Young) son Harrison and daughter Harper; daughter-in-law Linda (daughter Amy (Nathan Kerr), daughter Addison and son Aiden; son Shane (Laurie); daughter Rachel (Jamie Beggs) daughters Nevaeh and Brodie); sister-in-law Pat Koontz of Texas (two daughters Karla (Jimmy Civitate) & Kathy (Charles Anderson); nephews DJ (Lori) Koontz, Craig Richey, Mike Richey and Robert (Brenda) Black.

She is preceded in death by her son Dennis; brother Karl Shoenhair; parents John & Marjorie Shoenhair; aunt Margaret Hurley; aunt Norma Lee Black; and husbands Donald Kerns and Leo Scott.

Memorials may be directed to: Israel Family Hospice House in care of the Mary Greeley Foundation at 1111 Duff Avenue, Ames, IA 50010 in memory of Marcella Kerns-Scott.

I worked with Marcella in the Extension Nutrition program, when she lived near Carbon. What an enthusiastic person in whatever did--nutrition, promoting pork, etc. It was a pleasure
knowing her. Sympathy to your family.
