Lucille Siple

Faye Lucille Siple passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. The daughter of Louis and Bessie Smith Siple, Lucille was born in Ellston, Iowa on August 4, 1918. She attended school in Kellerton through fourth grade and graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1935. Lucille excelled at declamatory and public speaking, participating and winning many local and regional events. She enjoyed high school drama and was female lead in her junior and senior class plays, as well as the all high school play in '35.
Upon graduation, Lucille began working for the Ringgold County Mutual Telephone Company as an operator in the days of manual switchboards, crank-handle telephones, and party lines. She retired from the Continental Telephone Company in 1982 as the manager of the Mount Ayr toll office.
Lucille's zest for life was evident in all that she did. She faithfully followed Iowa football and basketball, and attended many memorable games at Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye arena. Her nephews and nieces looked upon her as another parental figure and role model in their lives. She is remembered by them as a bird and nature lover, family historian, photographer, avid reader, letter writer and a caretaker of family, friends and neighbors.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; sister Louise Ballou; brother-in-law Leslie Ballou; nephew Duane Ballou; two infant nieces and infant grand-nephew.
She is survived by Duane's widow Millie Ballou; her nephew Monte (Pat) Ballou; grand-nieces Mary Ballou of Springfield, Oregon, Becky Ballou of Austin, Texas, Laurie Ballou Scott of London, England, Linda (Jeff Fahrenwald) Ballou of Rockford, Illinois; grand-nephews Mark and Matt Ballou of Pella; great grand-nieces Jacki and Kelli Ballou of Colorado Springs, Co; and great grand-nephew Andy Ballou Fahrenwald of Rockford, Illinois.

Guestbook

I grew up visiting my paternal grandmother, Bertha McAninch (Overholser) at least 2-4 times a year in Mt. Ayr. Each visit always included some time with Lucille Siple and Louise Ballou. I remeber sitting on my grandmother''s porch as Lucille got off work and walked down the hill one block to grandma''s house to stop and visit. She was always smiling and full of joy. When I was of legal driving age my parents and I would pick up Lucille and Louise with my grandma go bird watching around the Mt. Ayr area. My children had their pictures taken with them in the early 90''s in front of their home. In 2007 I traveled back with my wife to see Lucille and at age 89 she still had all the energy and joy of the woman I knew in my youth. I will miss her not being around. Heaven shines a lot brighter now that she joined the saints.

I have very special memories of Lucille as a young girl. My Mother, Ruth Wheelock, was also a telephone operator with Lucille. They worked split shifts and I spent time at the telephone office. The "telephone girls" like Lucille, were like a second family to me. I always enjoyed seeing her when I came back to Mount Ayr for a visit. Lucille was a very special lady!!
