Kenneth Clymer

Kenneth Rex Clymer was born July 15, 1939 to Earl and Mabel Bradshaw Clymer on his grandparents farm east of Diagonal, Iowa.  He was the youngest of five brothers and three sisters. He passed away on Thursday April 28, 2022 at age 82.

Kenny enjoyed growing up in Tingley and had a lot of friends.  He was always a very hard worker and that started when he was 8 years old.  He had two paper routes; the Creston News Advertiser and the Des Moines Register.  In the winter time he had two warm up places on his route.  One was Noni and Cliff Giles' house and the other was with Floyd Marriner.  At Floyd’s house he would start the coffee, put wood in the stove, go deliver some more papers and then stop back again to have a cup of coffee with Floyd while he warmed up again.  Sometimes Noni Giles would be fixing breakfast and he would eat with them while they all caught up on the latest Tingley news.  When he got a little older he cleaned the doctor’s office and did as many other jobs as he could find. He graduated with the class of 1959.

He joined the Air Force in August 1959 and received his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio, Texas.  At Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas he received training for diesel mechanics in electric power production.  Next he was stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota, then Gander, Newfoundland and Hanna City, Illinois.  He received his honorable discharge in August 1965 as Airman First Class.

After leaving the Air Force, he worked as a mechanic at Creston Motors, Metro Ford, Bob Brown Chevrolet and Stivers Ford and Lincoln in Des Moines.  He was a member of Local 254 Machinist Union and served as union steward and auditor for many years.  He was a union member for over 50 years.

Kenny met his high school sweetheart, Helen Pine, at the Mount Ayr skating rink.  They married on March 20, 1960 and had 62 wonderful years together.  They had three children; Becky Jo, David Jon, and Larry Von.  He enjoyed their 5 grandchildren; Shaun Thrap, Kyle Thrap, Jerad Clymer, Kelsi Thrap and Sydney Clymer.  He was also blessed to have 8 great grandchildren; Daryl Lee Von Clymer, Dallas Joseph Thrap, Luke Patrick Thrap, Addison Grace Thrap, McKenna Paige Thrap, Olivia Jade Thrap, Will Nicholas Thrap and Tessa Lynn Thrap.

Kenny always kept busy around home and did many home improvement projects.  He enjoyed Nascar, car shows and collecting miniature cars, hats and belt buckles.  After retirement he enjoyed traveling, yard work and gardening. His favorite trip was their Alaskan Cruise.

He was preceded in death by their son, David Jon, his parents, Earl and Mabel Clymer, five brothers; Raymond, Bill (Willard), Bing (Phillip), Donnie, Bo (Arvid) and three sisters; Pauline, Audrey and an infant sister.

Survivors include his wife Helen, his daughter Becky and her husband Kenneth, his son Larry and his wife Marylou.  Also his five grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, Rhonda Clymer his niece but was raised as a sister, along with many nieces and nephews. He was an amazing loving and caring man and will never be forgotten.

Memorials are to the Tingley Community Center and Tingley Cemetery
