Ivan Dolecheck

Ivan Frank Dolecheck was born March 31, 1929, near Diagonal, Iowa, the second son of Frank Joseph Dolecheck and Ethel Valentine (Blauer) Dolecheck. He welcomed three more siblings, Iona Mae, Leland Duane, and Karen Marie.

Ivan passed away peacefully on June 2, 2022, at the age of 93.

Ivan started his early education at Fairview School where he often told the story of getting on his sled in the wintertime and coasting the mile to and from school with one push.

After his elementary years, Ivan continued his education in Mount Ayr, graduating with the class of 1947. He was an outstanding athlete playing both football and basketball. He was extremely proud of playing on two undefeated football seasons at Mount Ayr and often joked his first football game he saw he played in. His passion for football continued throughout his lifetime as he attended practically every home football game in Mount Ayr to cheer on the Raiders. At every opportunity he could, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in all of their activities.

Following high school graduation, he began his lifelong calling of being a farmer and at age 20 married Leola Marie Loomis on October 7, 1949. Four children were born to this union: Wayne Ivan, Cecil Allen, Linda Marie and Roger LeRoy.

One of Ivan’s favorite pastimes was playing croquet. He spread his love of the game from a sand court in Tingley to the backyard of his parent’s home, to entering various tournaments in Ringgold County and teaching grandkids how to play in his own backyard.

Ivan loved to shoot pool and never passed up the opportunity to play pool or cards with family and friends. Even when faced with no one else to play with, he chose to play solitaire.

Ivan lived and farmed his entire life in Ringgold County renting various farmland near Goose Pond corner until 1964 when he purchased what is now part of Dolecheck Farms at Blackmore Corner. As an O’s Gold seed dealer, Ivan and Leola were blessed with the opportunity to travel around the world.

Farming and tilling God’s land was always a major part of Ivan as he continued to work on the farm until the age of 91. Ivan and Leola moved to Mount Ayr in 1999. His pride and joy those years were his sweet corn patch and garden at Blackmore Corner. He enjoyed giving away fruits of his and God’s labor to friends and family. Ivan’s favorite saying was, “I planted it, but God did the rest.” Ivan and Leola attended the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr until moving to Blackmore Corner in 1964.  He transferred his membership to Ellston United Methodist Church where he remained a faithful member, including many years as church treasurer.

In addition to his parents, Ivan was predeceased by infant brother Donald Dean; sister Iona; eldest son Wayne; and daughter-in-law Becky.

Dolecheck survivors are his wife of 72 years, Leola; brother Leland (Sandra) Dolecheck; sister Karen (Jerry) Wimer; son Cecil and his wife Patti of Mount Ayr, daughter Linda Crandall and husband Jeff of Kingwood, Texas, and son Roger and wife Linda of Ellston; ten grandchildren Eric Dolecheck, Josie Johnson (Al), Darin Dolecheck (Darla), Kari Lasnau (Chad), Hannah Seydewitz (Peter), Brad Crandall (Jessica), Trevor Anderson, Kyle Dolecheck, Kirsten Martin (Ben), and Bailey Anderson; fourteen great grandchildren Kaitlyn and Becca Dolecheck, Becky and Colby Johnson, Joel and Jana Dolecheck, Addison, Benjamin and Camden Lasnau, Audrey and Evan Seydewitz and Brynn, Nora, and Marin Crandall.

Memorials are to the Ellston United Methodist Church or a Charity of Your Choice.

Ivan's hand told of a man who was strong; his smile and voice revealed a person rich in love and strong in faith. He is at peace in the Lord's hand.
