Irene Snyder

A famous writer once said "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give".
If that is true, then Irene made a great life. Irene was a most giving person.

Irene Lois Cover was born on 08 May 1920 in Drinkwater, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the second child of Daniel Cover and Carrie Snyder. Her sister Helen (Franck) preceded her in death. After returning from Canada, they came to Iowa and lived in Bedford from 1925 to 1946.
Irene went to Bedford Community School and graduated with her high school diploma and teaching certificate. She taught school for one year then went to work with her lifelong partner and husband, Jay, in various businesses in Diagonal, Iowa.
Irene and Jay were high school sweethearts and were married on 18 February 1939. Two children were born to this union, Liane Kay and Ronald Jay. Liane married Tom Austin and reside in Des Moines, Iowa. They have three children, Steve, Roni and Chad. Ron married Bille Jean Rusk, reside in Brooklyn, Iowa and have two children, Dan and Nathan. Irene enjoyed her five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. This year Irene and Jay celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.
Irene was an avid gardener and her greatest love was to cook for her family, as well as, everyone else. There was always an extra chair for anyone at her table.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

Irene's memorials will go to the Lions Club, Fire Dept and Community Building, all located in Diagonal.

So sorry to see this notice. It was a joy knowing her. Had many laughs when Dean and I had the cafe. She will be missed by many but sure that she will be gardening and waiting to share with us when we join her.

Irene was a friend to all and could make any garden beautiful. She passed her talents on to her children and was a wonderful cook and baker. I recall when I lived in Diagonal and Liane and Tom spent holidays, Irene would let her grandchildren order what kind of pie they wanted. Each got their own choice. That''s the kind of spoiling loving grandmother she was. Rest in peace and may heaven be more beautiful as Irene will bring flowers with her!
She will be missed but never forgotten!

Irene Irene Irene - what a loving person she was, always happy, thoughts of her just make me smile. I first got to know Irene many years ago when I worked at Taylor Fiberglass, working there as a teenager was maybe not my pick of jobs but the benefits were awesome! I made sure to never miss work on Friday as Irene''s Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes were hands down the absolute best. I know you will miss her, she was a wonderful person and I know our dear Lord will be eating well with her up there in heaven.

You were blessed by knowing Irene! From first memories of choosing a colored chick from the hatchery to watching her at "home in her garden" in her retirement years was thousands of memories of Irene''s loving and generosity. Our hearts and prayers are with you Jay, Liane, and Ron and families. God has an angel in His garden now.

Irene was a very special person. We were so blessed to have her as a next door neighbor. And our children were more blessed with the extra attention she always showed them. Many fond memories of her working in her vegetable garden, hours spent in her flower gardens, all her yummy cooking, surprise food deliveries made to our house via the spirea bush, and her great sense of humor. I never worried about a bare cupboard, forI could always go to Irene''s and get anything I needed - was a much better offering than any grocery store!!! Love you, Irene!!!
