Helen Banks Padgitt

Helen Mae Banks Padgitt was born June 14, 1938 in Leon, Iowa, to Glen and Hazel (Harris) Banks. She passed away at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa on August 7, 2014 at the age of 76.
Helen suffered an injury at birth, which caused her lifelong physical disability. Though she battled physical limitations, they never dampened her enjoyment of life or her many accomplishments. Not only did Helen learn to speak and walk, she delighted in singing and dancing.
Helen was raised on a farm near Beaconsfield, Iowa. She and her mother made many trips to Iowa City, Iowa for doctor care. At the age of 10, Helen's family moved to Compton, California. After residing there a few years, they returned to Ringgold County. Helen graduated from Kellerton High School in 1956.
Shortly after finishing high school, Helen married Jack J. Padgitt on June 13, 1956 at the Wee Kirk of the Heather Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jack & Helen began their married life in California; while there they had a son, Chris, and a daughter Athena. They lived in California for four years before returning to Iowa in 1962, to farm south of Kellerton. There they raised their family and had another daughter, Naomi.
Helen was active in church; she loved playing the piano and helping with Vacation Bible School. She shared her love of music with many, including her family. She enjoyed performing with her three children in a band, Athena Anne and the Country Bumpkins, for many years.
Helen cherished her family and friends the most; she always had a positive outlook towards life and appreciated every day. Family and friends recall that Helen was always smiling and cheerful.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
Survivors include: Jack Padgitt; her three children Chris Padgitt and wife Teresa, Athena Simpson and husband Randy, and Naomi Dolecheck and husband Allan; seven grandchildren Tiffany Padgitt McDonald and husband Marty, Jamy Padgitt, Adam Simpson and wife Lauren, Jacob Simpson, Isaac Simpson, Sheryl Dolecheck Downing and husband Matt, and Erin Dolecheck; eight great grandchildren Kaley McDonald, Brynna McDonald, Jalyn Hawkins, Jody Hawkins, Mikaela Downing, Chasse Downing, Chloe Downing, and Ridge Simpson; along with a great many other family members and friends.
A memorial fund has been established to the Kellerton Methodist Church.

Helen Banks and I attended Monroe Center #5 country school northwest of Kellerton when we were in the lower grades. During my last year of school there her mother, Hazel Banks, was our kindly teacher. Sometimes Mrs. Banks would stay after school and do desk work and while I was waiting for one of my parents to pick me up, I would push Helen in the swing as she was handicapped even as a child. Years later, after I retired to Mount Ayr, Helen and I providentially met and she recognized me. I later visited her at Clearview Home on several occasions.
