Eldon E. Still

Eldon Elbert Still, 80, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr.

Eldon was born the 8th child of 10, on a farm north of Mount Ayr on July 10, 1936 to Mary Ellen Parker and Leonard L. Still. Eldon attended Caledonia country school, graduating the 8th grade. Eldon then began his career as a farmer, helping on the family farm, until he married Frances "Anne" Garrity on April 11, 1960 in Winterset.

He and Anne made their home on a farm south of Kellerton along with Anne's brother Jack and sister Kathleen. A son, Brad Eldon, was born January 18, 1965 and a daughter, Beth Anne, on March 20, 1967.

Eldon and Anne divorced in 1984 and Eldon married Janice "Jan" Stringham Simpson on August 2, 1986 at the Kellerton United Methodist Church. With this union, he gained 2 sons Randy and Tim.

Eldon was a lifelong farmer until the time he and Jan moved to town in 1994. He also spent many years driving the school bus 1960-1977, serving on the Grand Valley school board and Ringgold County Board of Supervisors.

In his "retirement" Eldon served on the Mount Ayr City Council many years and spent countless hours always helping Brad farm, checking cows, fixing fence, being the "go-fer" and raising a very large garden; canning for countless days on end and sharing with his family. He was always there for his children and grandchildren and a very proud father and grandfather. He enjoyed every minute of being with his family, laughing, and playing cards, cooking lots of food to be sure no one went hungry and making/eating popcorn. Eldon was the popcorn man - delivering popcorn around town frequently and especially to the Ringgold Hospital where Jan was an x-ray tech for many years.

After failing health, Eldon found his new home at Mount Ayr Health Care Center in September 2015; where the staff soon nicknamed him "Boss" and enjoyed his sincerity appreciation and sense of humor. Jan continued to be part of his daily life and he looked forward her visits and he enjoyed their outings to drive around the country side or sit at the kitchen table at "Jan's house" as often as he could.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 30 years, Jan of Mount Ayr; son Brad (Christy) Still of Kellerton; daughter Beth (Mike) Combs of Marion; step-son Randy (Athena) Simpson of Franklin, Tennessee; step-daughter-in-law, Chris Simpson of Corning; his 4 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 5 step-grandsons and 2 step-granddaughters: Brandon Still and Brock (Makenzie) Still of Mount Ayr; Brian (Tessa) Still of Kellerton; Dalton (Rachel) Combs of Marion; Micaela Combs of Ames; Adam (Lauren) Simpson of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Jacob (Hilary Chittom) and Isaac of Franklin ,Tennessee; Dustin Surrell of Jefferson City , Missouri and Brandi Simpson of Corning; Trevor Gooding of Mount Ayr; Macey Bowen of Kellerton; 2 great-granddaughters and 1 more expected in August 2017; 2 great step-granddaughters and 2 great step-grandson: Kambreigh and Aspen Still of Mount Ayr, IA and Baby-to-Be Combs of Marion; Grasye and Kailey and Brycen Surrell of Jefferson City, Missouri; Ridge Simpson of Spring Hill, Tennessee; sister Joyce Johnson, sister-in-law, Ethel Still, brother Ed (Glenda) all of Mount Ayr; and many extended family and friends.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents; step-son Tim Simpson; step-granddaughter, Charlcey Bowen; 3 sisters and 4 brothers and their spouses: Emma Murphy, Ethel (Cliff) Doolittle, Leucena (Wilbur) Kobbe, Guy, Ray (Vesta), Lee and George; brother-in-law Jim Johnson.

Guestbook

The best part of school was riding the bus! Ellie was so kind and sweet. Ellie really related to the kids and seemed to truly enjoy us all. I recall Ellie with the highest of respect in all he did. I will always remember him and smile.

We are sorry to learn of Eldon's death. He drove Donna's school bus. We look forward to seeing Eldon alive again in the resurrection. John 5:28, 29.

So sorry for your loss. I tried to visit with Ellie when I came to visit with Aunt Helen. He was the last of the neighborhood elders( for want of a better word) to pass so kinda makes the neighborhood gone. I am sorry that I didn\'t make it up to see you all but there has been this thing going around and I didn\'t figure you needed it. Thinking of the whole family during this time. Lots of memories--bus driver, neighbor and more.

So sorry to hear of Eldon's passing. He was my bus driver through out my school days. He was the best. He always knew me over the years and spoke to me anytime I seen him. He will be missed.

Remembering some great memories and a smile comes to my face. You were a great role model for all and the best ever at making "fried chicken". Rest in peace Uncle Elli e.
