David Stuck

David Rodger Stuck, son of Samuel Burnison & Ninabel (Denhart) Stuck, was born November 19, 1939, at home in Bloomfield, IA. When he was two years old, his family moved to Grand River, IA, where his father started a rock quarry.

Dave was baptized on Palm Sunday, 1945 in the Grand River Methodist Church. He was currently a member of the First Christian Church in Warrensburg, MO.

Dave attended & graduated with the Class of 1958 from Grand River Public School. After majoring in “fun” at both Iowa State University & Simpson College, he returned home & worked at the quarries. When traveling between the Allendale Quarry & the Grand River Quarry, he often stopped for coffee at Rogers Cafe in Mt. Ayr. It was here that he met Cheryl Moore, who would be his future wife.

Dave enlisted in the U.S. Air Force & left on Jan 16, 1962, for basic training in San Antonio, TX. After basic, he was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. He came home in late July & married Cheryl on July 29, 1962 at the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church. The trip back to Tucson was their honeymoon.

Dave was honorably discharged in August 1965. They returned to Mt. Ayr and Dave began working for E.I. Sargent Quarries. In Spring 1966, he ran a bull dozer for Wesley Hymbaugh & later Joe Sobotka. In early winter of that year, Dave started working for Stuck Farms. They moved to Grand River in April 1967.

On July 20, 1966, Dave & Cheryl became parents to their first son, James Ewing Stuck. On April 20, 1970, their family was completed with the birth of their second son, Stephen Burnison Stuck.

Cheryl’s brother was killed in a car accident in August 1971 & Dave purchased his Milk Distributorship. He delivered milk “house to house” as well as to schools & businesses. Dave purchased Valley Grocery in Grand River in early 1977. Cheryl managed & ran the store, & Dave continued with the milk route.

In July 1986, Dave started his last career. He became an “over the road” truck driver. He drove a moving van for North American Van Lines for a year. In August 1987, he began driving for Schneider National Carriers. Cheryl sold the grocery store & joined him as his co-driver in August 1988. They drove in all the 48 states & sometimes into Canada. They drove “team” for 18 years, retiring in Sept 2006. They both received “Million Mile” Safe Driving Awards. It was a job they both loved. They moved back to Mt. Ayr in 1989.

Dave was a natural athlete & excelled at nearly everything he tried. He drove a race car for several years; played pool & bowled on several leagues throughout the years. He played “town team” softball until he was 45 years old. He loved golf & played nearly every day until his health declined in 2015.

Dave & Cheryl moved to Warrensburg, MO in January 2010 to be closer to their sons. Dave loved his family & always had a positive attitude. He had a great sense of humor & was fun to be around.

I was so sorry to hear about David's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Cheryl, Jim, Steve and all family/friends. I know he was a very loved and kind man. May we all take comfort knowing he is in heaven where there is no pain and suffering. Our trust in God to help everyone get through this difficult period, and those difficult times that arise in the future.

We look forward to seeing Dave alive again in the resurrection. Jesus promised, "Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out to a resurrection." John 5:28, 29
