Lawrence Lee Rychnovsky passed away peacefully from this life on Thursday, March 21, 2019. The second son of Clarice Ruth Cabaret and Joseph John Rychnovsky, Lawrence came into the world on March 2, 1933. As a child, he attended Harmony Country School, southwest of Diagonal and graduated from Diagonal Community High School in 1952. After graduation, Lawrence worked as a mechanic at Johnson Ford in Diagonal. In 1953, he entered the United States Army and served until the death of his father, Joseph. Lawrence was honorably discharged and returned home to work the family farm.
Lawrence met Retta Sue Young at a neighborhood picnic. He said, “I thought she was beautiful, so I asked her out and she said yes”. They were married October 20, 1956 and moved to Omaha where Lawrence worked as a mechanic. After a short time, they returned to the family farm, where they spent the next 46 years until Sue’s passing. They were joined by a daughter, Laura (Laurie) in 1958, a son, Mark in 1960 and another daughter, Linda in 1967.
Lawrence was active in the community, serving on the Diagonal Community School Board, the Lions Club, the American Legion, the FHA Board and Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation Commission. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Diagonal and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy, also serving on the Church Council.
When asked what he would do differently if living his life over, Lawrence said “Not one thing. I’m satisfied. We were poor so there was only one way to go and that was up. I’m my own boss and I don’t answer to anybody”. His life was lived on his own terms.
Preceding Lawrence in death were his wife Sue; his parents Ruth and Joe; his sister-in-law, Reba Rychnovsky; his in-laws, Roland and Emma Ursula Held Young and their son, Robert.
Lawrence is survived by his children Laura Rychnovsky (Robert Forbes) , Mark (Tammy Blazek) Rychnovsky and Linda (Bruce) Streicher; his grandchildren, Jennifer Kwon (Cody Brenneman), Mitchell Kwon, Brook and Blake Rychnovsky, Colin, Austin and Sydney Streicher; one great-grandson, Rychnovsky Brenneman. Lawrence is also survived by his brother John Rychnovsky; brother-in-law Scott Young; sister-in-law Kathy Young as well as several nieces and nephews.
Lawrence will be laid to rest in the Diagonal Bohemian Cemetery following a ceremony 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the St. Josephs Catholic Church in Mount Ayr. Open visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Memorials may be directed to the Diagonal Bohemian Cemetery.
