Ermil Maxine Baker was born at home on a farm near Forest City, Missouri on January 12, 1927 to Minnie Marie (Wake) and George Lewis Baker. She grew up in Forest City and walked to a one room country school and later boarded with relatives to attend high school in town. After completing two years at Maryville College, she applied to teach school at the one room Harmony Grove School near Skidmore, Missouri.
She boarded with the school board president’s family, meeting their son, Joe Hainline. Joe and Ermil were married August 8, 1946 and started farming near Skidmore. In 1951 they bought their first farm near Kellerton, Iowa.
Ermil was baptized into the Kellerton Christian Church where the family attended. She was also an active member of the Rebekah Lodge as well as a homemaker and partner in the farming operation and other business ventures. Coming from a musically talented family she continued with her gift of music through singing and playing the guitar at church, funerals, community choirs, nursing homes, and in community gatherings.
