Doris Maxine (Vanderflute) Hutchinson, daughter of Johnny and Clarissa Vanderflute was born March 13, 1920 in Athens Township, near Lamoni. Doris spent her early years on the farm with her parents and two sisters, Lola and Opal in Decatur County. She graduated from Lamoni High School in 1938.
On December 18th, 1938 she married Glen Hutchinson of Mount Ayr. They lived in Mount Ayr for several years and ran a restaurant business for four years. She was also in business with her parents driving semis for Swift Packing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1955 they moved to Miami, Florida for four years where she worked as a hostess for Howard Johnson’s. They returned to Iowa in 1959 and moved to Diagonal where they owned and operated a grocery store for twenty years and retired in 1980. Her husband Glen passed away in 1988 and she started back to work for the First State Bank of Diagonal and retired in May 2000.
Doris passed away June 2nd, 2019 at the age of 99. Preceding her in death was her husband, Glen; sons Eddie and Gene; sisters Opal and Lola.
Doris is survived by daughter Joann (David) Rathe of Creston; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Doris will be cremated at her wishes and a private memorial service will be held at a later date in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Memorials contributions may be directed to the Care Initiatives Hospice.
